Zodiac Update: Is Your Star Sign Changing?

We originally published this blog post back in 2016, but as the topic has recently resurfaced in the news, we thought we’d provide an update for any star sign enthusiasts!

For years, many of us have known exactly what our star signs are, whether you’re an optimistic Aries or a passionate Scorpio. Astrology suggests that your date of birth determines your zodiac sign, accompanied by strengths, weaknesses, likes and dislikes – which may or may not match up to your own personality traits.

But could all that be set to change?

Why might the star signs change in 2020?

Back in 2016, an educational article published by Nasa revealed that our star signs may actually be wrong. It came down to a change in the Earth’s axis and a little white lie from the Babylonians, which overall meant a possible shift in star signs as we know them.

The Baylonians, like us, had a 12-month calendar. To match things up nice and evenly, they decided to divide the zodiac up into 12 signs, selecting 12 zodiac constellations – when in fact there were 13. The idea was that each zodiac sign would get its own month of the year.

In the 3000 years since then, another issue has come to light: the sky has shifted. Due to gravitational effects from the sun, the North Pole doesn’t point in quite the same direction anymore, meaning that different dates correspond to different constellations.

So what about the new 13th star sign that seems to have been forgotten about all these years?

Is there a new star sign for 2020?

The mysterious 13th star sign is called Ophiuchus, and is said to fall between Scorpio and Sagittarius on the zodiac calendar. Represented by the constellation Serpens, its symbol is a man wrestling with a snake.

According to astrologists, the Ophiuchus sign is most compatible with Pisces.

Key personality traits for Ophiuchus include passionate, curious, funny and just a little self-absorbed at times.

What are the new star sign dates?

With all of this in mind, what would the new star sign dates be? Well, here’s what the new Zodiac guide could look like….

Aquarius: Feb 16 – March 11

Pisces: March 11 – April 18

Is my star sign really changing in 2020?

Of course, this is huge news for those who follow their astrological findings religiously. Even those who are casual readers of the daily horoscopes will probably feel a little cheated after all these years.

However, it’s important to remember that this news actually came out back in 2016 – and nothing seems to have changed since then. The topic is resurfacing in 2020, but does that really mean that the star signs are changing?

Dwayne Brown, a NASA spokesperson, even stated: “We didn’t change any Zodiac signs, we just did the math.” In other words, astronomy does not equal astrology!

If you connect with your original star sign and identify with those personality traits, then we see nothing wrong with continuing to follow your horoscope as normal.

If you’re sticking with your current sign and searching for a piece of zodiac jewellery to tell the world exactly what you’re all about, why not take a look at the selection of star sign jewellery available at Joshua James? On the other hand, if you’re seeking out a gift for someone born under the new Ophiuchus star sign, you might have a slightly harder time.

Most zodiac jewellery collections will omit the controversial 13th sign, but what about a piece of birthstone jewellery instead?

Going by the ‘new’ star sign dates, the Ophiuchus birthstone would be topaz or citrine for November, or turquoise, tanzanite or blue zircon for December.

With that in mind, take a look at some of our favourite Ophiuchus birthstone jewellery picks below!
