Matching Wedding & Engagement Rings

Matching your engagement ring and wedding band is important. It’s tradition, after all, wearing both together, so you’ll want to be confident you’re picking a matching set that suits your everyday style.

What are Wed-Fit Rings?

If you’re stuck on picking the right match for your engagement ring, a ‘wedfit’, ‘wedfriendly’, or ‘diamond fit’ ring might be the right choice for you.

Wed-fit rings are shaped to fit around all shapes and sizes of engagement rings and engagement ring diamonds. They’re a great choice if you’d like your rings to sit flush together on your finger for a seamless look.

Wedding Ring Styles and How to Match Them

Plain Wedding Rings

Plain wedding bands are a timeless choice, symbolising your eternal love in the simplest, purest way.
They also work well with lots of different engagement ring styles as they’re a fantastic blank canvas to let your engagement ring shine.
Plain bands can also be quite thin, leaving space for a larger stone to sit comfortably on top, making them a good fit for a solitaire engagement ring or halo engagement ring.
Don’t think that plain means boring though! With a range of different band profiles and styles available, you can still customise a plain wedding ring band to perfectly fit with your style and comfort.

Diamond Set

Diamond-set wedding rings mean sparkle and shimmer! If you have a diamond-set engagement ring and wedding band, matching the two creates a look that’s full of glitz and glamour.
Diamond-set rings (particularly pavé settings) can be quite tall as they need to fit a sturdy enough band as well as the small diamonds and their settings. If you’d like your rings to sit flush together, you might want to avoid a diamond-set wedding ring if your engagement ring has any of these features:
• If you have a relatively low-set engagement ring
• If you have a particularly large diamond on your engagement ring
• If you have a longer proportioned diamond on your engagement ring, like a marquis-cut, emerald-cut or oval-cut diamond
Diamond set rings also look beautiful on their own, so they’re perfect if you’re a little cautious about wearing your engagement ring every day.

Textured

If you want a unique wedding band, but find that a diamond-set band just isn’t for you, a textured wedding ring might be the right choice for you.
Textured wedding rings and engagement rings cover various styles, from dainty glittering embellishments to organic brushed finishes to eye-catching faceted designs. This means they’re incredibly versatile, catering for different styles and tastes.
Engagement rings with a textured finish are also a popular style of men’s engagement rings, allowing you to inject a bit of your personality and unique taste into a ring without feeling too flashy!

Shaped

Shaped wedding rings can be used to perfectly fit around your engagement ring for a flush setting and seamless look, but they’re also a stylistic choice, not just a practical one.
Shaped wedding bands open up a whole world of unique engagement ring and wedding band styles, whether you’re looking for a nature-inspired ring or something more modern and futuristic!
Some popular shaped bands include:
• Chevrons/V-shapes
• Twisted bands
• Indented bands
• Knotted bands

How to Wear a Wedding Band and Engagement Ring Pairing

First, we need to answer a very common question: Wedding band or engagement ring - which one goes on first?

It’s traditional for the wedding ring to be the first ring you put on the ring finger of your left hand, as it is thought to be closer to the heart that way! However, today, it’s completely up to you. Different cultures have different preferences, or you might just want to do something different that works for you!

Why not try:
  • Wearing your engagement ring first, followed by your wedding ring?
  • Wearing your engagement ring on one hand, and your wedding ring on the other?
  • Wearing both your engagement and wedding rings on your right hand?
  • Wearing just one ring day-to-day?
A wedding band is generally worn on the left hand in the UK, US, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Iran, Chile, Italy, France, Sweden, Slovenia, and other Commonwealth nations. It’s common to wear your wedding ring on your right hand in countries like Germany, Greece, Russia, Spain, India, Colombia, Venezuela, and Poland.
Ultimately, it’s your ring, and you can wear it however you feel best represents your love and fits with your lifestyle, whether that’s going with tradition, or branching out and choosing your own style!

Think About Stone Shape

The diamond's shape has a big impact on how you choose an engagement ring and wedding band.

Longer vertical stones, like oval-cut diamonds, marquis-cut diamonds and emerald-cut diamonds will need a bit more space on the finger than round cuts or princess cuts, for example.

Keep an Eye on Proportions

The proportions of both your engagement ring stone and the engagement ring band are also something you should take into account when deciding on how to wear a wedding band and engagement ring together.

For example, larger engagement ring stones may need a thicker band for security and longevity, but this will also affect the proportions of your wedding ring. For many people, a thicker engagement ring goes well with a slimmer wedding band, so as not to detract from the stone!

How to Choose the Right Wedding Band to Match Your Engagement Ring

Picking your Metal Colour

Most people will choose the same metal colour for their engagement ring and wedding ring to create a neat, matching look.

Many people tend to prefer one colour of metal for their everyday jewellery, and this often extends into their engagement ring and wedding ring preferences - If your partner usually prefers gold jewellery, a gold engagement ring will likely suit them better!

While it’s a popular aesthetic choice to match your metal colour, it’s also an important consideration regarding the longevity of your ring. Mixing metals means that when the rings rub against each other, they’re much more likely to sustain scratches, chips, or damage. Mixing gold with platinum is particularly dangerous, as the harder platinum will break down the softer gold, destroying it over time!
